Buenos Aires, Argentina
Universidad de San Andrés
To complete MLO 5, I studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina for the Spring 2017 semester. While I was abroad, I took courses that pertained to Argentine Literature and Modern Museum Art History at Universidad de San Andres. These courses helped me gain more knowledge about the Argentine culture. When I decided to study in Argentina, my goal was to become more familiar with their traditions and beliefs and see how that compared to my own personal experience. Also, I wanted to understand how the Spanish language varied in Argentina in comparison to other Spanish speaking countries especially Mexico, with which I am most familiar with.By engaging with some local students, I was able to accomplish this while continuing to practice my Spanish written and speech abilities. However, since Argentina is a very diverse country, I was also exposed to different cultures such as those coming from China, Uruguay, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru. This helped me see the Spanish linguistic variation because each country had specific vocabulary that they used and had different entonations that predominated in different accents. Some of the aspects that I wasn't able to complete had to do with time limitations. Since Argentina is such a big and diverse country, I felt that I needed more time to experience and adapt to their lifestyle. Some of the things I wasn't able to accomplish were the fact that I wasn't able to make a clear comparison between the traditions in the province as opposed to those in the industrial-developing city-life. Therefore, I would love to go back and be able to see how these differences are portrayed on the daily. Lastly, through the constant practice of the Spanish language, both in the classroom and in the public sphere, I was able to expand my vocabulary.
