THE PORTRAYAL OF LESBIAN IDENTITY IN THE LITERATURE OF ANZALDÚA AND MORAGA

Abstract in Spanish:
En el canon de la literatura chicana del siglo XX, Gloria Anzaldúa y Cherríe Moraga se destacan como las pioneras de la representación de la identidad lésbica, lo cual se manifiesta a través de su literatura narrativa y poética. El propósito principal de esta investigación es analizar cómo se incorpora la identidad lésbica en Borderlands/ la frontera: the new mestiza (1987) de Gloria Anzaldúa y Loving in the war years: lo que nunca pasó por sus labios (1983) de Cherríe Moraga. La importancia que tiene la representación de la identidad lésbica se observa mediante la cultura chicana, la religión católica, y el cuerpo femenino; lo cual corrobora el propósito de las escritoras. Asimismo, se establece que la intención de las escritoras a través de su escritura, no es sólo el hecho de incluir sus experiencias personales, sino también utilizarla como forma de activismo político.

Within the cannon of Chicano literature, Gloria Anzaldúa and Cherríe Moraga stand out as the pioneers of the representation of lesbian identity, which is manifested through their narrative and poetic literature. The purpose of this study is to analyze how lesbian identity is incorporated in Borderlands / La Frontera: The New Mestiza (1987) by Gloria Anzaldúa and Loving in the war years: [What Was Never Said] (1983) by Cherríe Moraga. The importance of the representation of the lesbian identity is observed through the Chicano culture, the Catholic religion, and the female body; which corroborates the purpose of the writers. Furthermore, it is argued that the objective of the writers is not only to include their personal experiences, but also to use them as a form of political activism.
